De’Vondre Campbell Walks Out on 49ers Mid-Game Drama Unfolds

The 49ers, on a Thursday Night Football loss to the Los Angeles Rams, that nears all but ending their playoff chances, were set back further when linebacker De’Vondre Campbell refused to play.

Campbell, who used to play for the Green Bay Packers, reportedly told the coaching staff before the game that he did not want to dress. It was a move head coach Kyle Shanahan described as “incredibly selfish.

Things deteriorated in the third quarter when Shanahan tried to bring in Campbell to replace Dre Greenlaw, activated from injured reserve after suffering an Achilles injury last season.

Campbell went back into the locker room instead of taking the field. “He’s somebody who doesn’t want to play football,” Shanahan said after the game. “I don’t think we need to talk about him anymore.

Campbell’s 49ers tenure seems likely at an end, especially from cornerback Charvarius Ward, who bluntly says, “He’s probably gonna get cut.” He isn’t the first of Campbell’s critics: the quarterback said he was “badly misused” during his Green Bay stint; also when he was out there playing for the Atlanta Falcons.

Campbell had an All-Pro season, but he hasn’t delivered the goods since; he won’t play that would likely seal his San Francisco fate.
