Blame Game on Ice: Hockey Fans Point Fingers at Trump for Team USA’s Loss to Canada

Team USA Falls to Canada in OT—And Some Fans Are Blaming Trump

The United States came up short in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship, losing 3-2 in overtime to Canada. But in a bizarre twist, some fans are pointing the finger at former President Donald Trump for the loss.

Connor McDavid sealed the win for Canada with a clutch overtime goal, crushing the hopes of American fans at TD Garden. Meanwhile, Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington delivered a series of jaw-dropping saves, making a strong case as the real game-changer for his squad.

Before the puck dropped in Boston, Team USA received a phone call from Trump, who offered words of encouragement—and a trademark jab at Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I will be speaking before the Governors tonight in D.C., and will sadly, therefore, be unable to attend. But we will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome. Good luck to everybody, and have a GREAT game tonight. So exciting! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Despite his enthusiasm, Trump didn’t attend the game. But his involvement was enough for some fans to suggest he jinxed Team USA.

“Trump jinxed Team USA,” one fan wrote on X. “Should’ve never made that phone call to wish them luck.”

“Trump’s phone call jinxed the USA vs. Canada,” another person added.

“And the #TrumpJinx is a thing. He did this with the Chiefs & now Team USA hockey,” a third fan claimed.

This marks the second time in recent weeks that Trump has been accused of cursing a team. Just two weeks ago at Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans, Trump hinted at supporting Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs—only for them to get dominated by the Philadelphia Eagles in a lopsided 40-22 loss.

Coincidence or curse? That’s up for debate, but some fans aren’t letting Trump off the hook.
