Samuel had asked for a trade after the 2024 season, and rumors swirled about his potential next home. This week, 49ers general manager John Lynch announced that the team would indeed be granting Samuel’s request—and now it’s made official.
Following the trade, Samuel went on Instagram, looking ecstatic about his relocation to Washington. And who wouldn’t be? The Commanders have a skilled young quarterback on a rookie deal, an explosive offense, and a chance for Samuel to be a central figure in the team’s turnaround.

Having just one year remaining on the 2022 contract extension he agreed to, Washington is now being forced to choose—re-sign Samuel or have him play his last year out. Either path appears to be a victory for both parties.
The trade will be consummated on March 12.
