Massive Power Outage Hits Spain, Portugal, and France: Millions Affected Unexpectedly

Millions of individuals in Spain, Portugal, and southern France experienced a sudden and massive power outage on Monday. The reason for the blackout was not yet determined.

Spain’s state grid operator Red Eléctrica issued through X (previously known as Twitter) that the electricity was reinstated in the north and south parts of Spain.

Meanwhile, French high-voltage grid company RTE announced through reports that there is restored power supply in south-western France. But according to RTE, it is yet not determined as to why there has been a gargantuan power outage.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez appealed in a TV address for citizens to stay calm, be responsible and cooperative. He asked the public to avoid non-essential travel and telephone calls, and to keep close tabs on developments from official sources. Sanchez stressed the importance of “civility and responsibility” in helping the authorities deal with the crisis effectively.

Impact Beyond Iberia: Disruption Extends to Morocco

Effects of the blackout were also experienced outside the Iberian Peninsula. Orange Maroc, a French telecoms group, cited service disruptions in its Moroccan internet services because of the power failure in Spain and Portugal.

In a statement, the company explained, “The disruption to our internet network is due to a widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal,” and added that the power failure had largely affected international connections.

Other large internet operators in Morocco, including Maroc Telecom and Inwi, have not yet made any statements about disrupted services. Moroccan authorities have also made no announcements about any significant impacts from the outage.

No Conclusive Cause Identified Yet

Speaking to the nation, Prime Minister Sanchez announced that there is as yet no “conclusive information” about the origin of the blackout.

“We still don’t have final information about the causes of this outage. It’s not worth speculating. We will know the causes; we are not excluding any hypothesis,” Sanchez said.

Authorities are still investigating, and more information will be released as more facts are learned.
